Course – “Introduction to International Development Cooperation”

CEsA—Center for Studies on Africa and Development (ISEG Research/ISEG, University of Lisbon)—announces a new edition of the course “Introduction to International Development Cooperation,” an initiative of Camões—Institute for Cooperation and the Portuguese Language, in collaboration with UNAVE — Association for Professional Training and Research at the University of Aveiro.
The course is coordinated by Carlos Sangreman, a researcher at CEsA, and features the participation of Professor Raquel Faria, also a researcher at CEsA, along with other experts from the University of Aveiro and ISCTE—University Institute of Lisbon. UNAVE/UINFOC—the Integrated Continuing Education Unit of the University of Aveiro—is responsible for accrediting the course and issuing final certificates to participants.
This training program aims to equip participants with basic skills in the mechanisms of development cooperation, including project design and an understanding of Portuguese cooperation strategies, linking theoretical concepts with practical application and contemporary challenges. By the end of the course, participants should have acquired knowledge of fundamental tools for development cooperation, as well as the skills to implement projects and analyze national and international strategies.
At the core of this program is the need to deepen understanding of Portugal’s cooperative relationships with third countries, both at the bilateral level—with particular emphasis on the PALOP countries and East Timor—and at the multilateral level, specifically within the framework of the European Union and international financial institutions. The proposed approach also incorporates the evolution of thinking on development and the history of international cooperation, enabling a critical analysis of current dynamics and future prospects.
The course is intended for anyone interested in international development cooperation—regardless of their field of study or country of origin—who wishes to acquire structured knowledge in this area. The course follows an e-learning model, operating asynchronously via a digital platform, which allows for great flexibility in scheduling and access to course content from various geographic locations.
The estimated time commitment is 4 to 6 hours per week. The final certification is equivalent to 6 ECTS credits.
