Corsino Fortes

Corsino António Fortes is a Capeverdian poet and politician. He was born in Mindelo, São Vicente Island on 14th of February 1933. He holds a law degree by University of Lisbon, and he was appointed a government member several times and performed many others political duties, such as being the Capeverdian ambassador in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Norway and Iceland. At the same time Fortes maintained his activity in the world of literature and is perceived as one of the most important poets in Cape Verde. He is one of the founders of the Association of Writers of Cape Verde. His poems has been published in anthologies in many countries and translated into various languages, just to mention English, French, Italian and Dutch. He was awarded by the Portuguese Government with Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique and Grã-Cruz da Ordem de Mérito, by the French Government with Grand Officier de L’ordre Nacional du Mérite and by the presidency of Cape Verde with Ordem do Vulcão. In book form, he published Pão & Fonema (Bread & Phoneme, 1974), Árvore & Tambor (Tree & Drum, 1986) and Pedras de Sol & Substância (Rocks of the Sun & Substance, 2001). These three books were jointly published in the trilogy A Cabeça Calva de Deus (The Bold Head of God 2001).
