Waldir Araújo

Waldir Araújo, born in 1971, is a journalist and writer from Guinea-Bissau. In 1985 he won the literary prize of Portuguese Cultural Center in Bissau and in the same year moved to Portugal where he did his secondary and university studies. He works as a journalist since 1996 and currently he is a member of the RDP África staff. In 2004, after winning a Scholarship for Literary Creation by the National Portuguese Culture Center, he spent some months with the Rabelados community at the Santiago Island in Cape Verde. He publishes his poems and short stories in newspapers and magazines in Portugal and Brasil. In 2008 he published the collection of short stories Admirável Diamante Bruto e Outros Contos (Admirable Rough Diamond and Other Stories, 2008). His short story “Sapateiro pela Liberdade da Pátria”(“Shoemaker for the Liberty of the Country”) was published in the collection of Lusophone short stories Dez Contos Para Ler Sentado (Ten Short Stories To Be Read While Sitting, 2012). Some of his poems were translated into English and Polish.
