The primacy of accommodation in the Brazilian economy

Abstract:

The capitalist world-economy is immersed in a generalized inertia. A movement of slow accumulation, low investment, limited growth rates, but with a high level of profit, and which takes place through intense pressure on existing levels of inequality, combining a global restructuring of wealth and income generation with a reproduction of the workforce in terms of its limited maintenance. Inertia that can be seen, mainly, from the productive-financial crisis of the first decade of the 2000s. Brazil is not oblivious to this inertia and its consequences. This article intends, from a conceptual reflection, to discuss the elements that characterize what I call the accommodation structure of the Brazilian economy.

Working Paper 95/2011: Feiras Livres e Mercados no Espaço Lusófono: Perspectivas de um estudo em psicologia social

Abstract:

This communication proposes a reflection on the research methods to be applied in the study “Feiras Livres e Mercados no Espaço Lusófono: Perspectivas de um estudo em psicologia social”. The interest in the field is due, in the first place, to the type of study to be carried out and to the singularities of the proposed project, such as the fact that it will be carried out in the cities of Bissau, Praia and São Paulo, involving researchers from different areas of science and propose a field work with the subjects. Fairs and markets constitute the empirical objective of this study, presenting themselves as important universes of human activity and survival that mark the urbanity of capitals in the Portuguese-speaking space. The aim is to study the components and conditions for building a work base that will enable workers in markets and fairs to generate income through work in micro-enterprises. The study must identify and describe the material and psychosocial conditions that made it possible to become a worker in these free markets, building and acquiring the knowledge to be included in this work activity.

Dialética do acomodatismo Brasileiro

Dialética do Acomodatismo Brasileiro

Abstract:

The capitalist world-economy is immersed in a generalised inertia. A movement of slow accumulation, low investment, limited growth rates, which comes about through intense pressure on the levels of inequalities historically existing. Brazil is not alien to the tensions of this movement. Dialética do acomodatismo Brasileiro presents the elements that characterize what we call the structure of Brazilian accommodation. The research showed that the recent accommodation of the Brazilian economy was expressed in the relative loss of its productive capacity, in the performance of the volume of imports and in the deterioration of its labour market. The Brazilian economic dynamics of income and wealth concentrating development was covered by: 1. a trajectory of industrial activities, without setting up an industrialisation process as such; 2. a continuous advance of agro-economic activities in a process of primarisation of the export roster which expands and asserts itself as a kind of perpetual mode; and 3. a labour market structured towards precarious conditions and labour relations and the reproduction of inequalities. From the accommodationist perspective presented here, the IA-Br showed that the recent accommodation of the Brazilian economy was due to a significant performance of the external sector, to the relative but not significant loss of its productive capacity and to the upsurge of its labour market, which, added to the recent political-institutional alterations, characterise the Brazilian Accommodation Structure.

Feiras livres e mercados no espaço lusófono: aspectos metodológicos

Feiras Livres e Mercados no Espaço Lusófono: Aspectos metodológicos

Abstract:

In Feiras livres e mercados no espaço lusófono: aspectos metodológicos the focus falls on aspects of the field of our research and we understand that a reflection on it is important due to: 1- specificities of our empirical object (the free fairs and markets that are work and economic activities present in urban centres in Brazil, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau; 2- our methodological options and ethical-political stance towards social reality and its actors; 3- the type of study we intend to carry out. Among the structuring axes of our research proposal we highlight that 1- we have the same set of concerns in relation to the different realities and contexts of study, that is, our focuses are: (a) the everyday processes that organize work in markets and free markets; (b) the conditions for the construction of a work base, that is, the set of knowledge, material resources and personal relationships that enables workers to generate income through work in micro-enterprises; 2- it is not intended to collect data for a comparison, but to ensure a cumulative knowledge, in which the realities of local fairs and markets, in each of the urban centres, are studied in their uniqueness and illuminate the understanding of the other contexts. This paper was presented at the Pro-Africa Project.

Abstract:

The deterioration of women’s income, and their consequent vulnerability to poverty, is particularly critical in the case of women who are the head of single-parent families – being them the only provider to the household, gender inequalities in the labor market affect them more significantly. A Vulnerabilidade à Pobreza das Mulheres Responsáveis por Famílias Monoparentais no Brasil e o Papel das Políticas Públicas seeks to understand the life experiences of these women, in Brazil, as well as the role of the State in alleviating their economic and social difficulties, where the effect of the Bolsa Família Programme will be studied in particular. The analysis of the Brazilian reality is enhanced by the presentation of relevant official statistics, complemented by a qualitative methodological approach based on semi-structured interviews conducted with women in this situation. It is concluded that their life experiences are affected by several hardships that are still relatively under-researched, but also by positive aspects related to their condition as single parents, above all in terms of their autonomy and perception of greater emancipation, as well as living in a safe and emotionaly stable environment.

The brazilian economy in an accommodative perspective : an essay on the deepening of dependency

Working Paper 170/2018: The Brazilian Economy in an Accommodative Perspective: An essay on the deepening of dependency

Abstract:

This article, eminently analytical, refers to the brazilian economy in an accommodative perspective. This refers to the internal mechanism of interactionadaptive to the instigations of the dynamics of the international division of labor and its modus operandi. It emerges that the central problem of the Brazilian economy is to maintain a pattern of reproduction of material life that guarantees the non-rupture of the fabric on which the conditions of accumulation have settled. This document aims to propose a way of analyzing the Brazilian economy and its relationship with the recent dynamic of the global economy. In order to do so, one takes into account its dependence trajectory with this dynamics and proposes to analyze it in a perspective of non-structural alteration of the components that support it and, as a hypothesis, of the way these components interact. The components, for the purposes of this essay, are: exports and imports of goods (here called the Decisive Activity), reproduction of the labor force (here considered, as a proxy, for the joint analysis of the unemployment rate and average real income in minimum wages) and the investment rate (as a percentage of GDP).
