The study of inequality has been the focus of much enhanced attention in recent years, including by virtue of the impact of the work of Thomas Piketty and associates, Branko Milanovic and others, or the inclusion of a SDG specifically dedicated to inequality in the 2030 global development agenda. Inequality has moved from the sidelines of development policy and research to its centre, and there is today a much better understanding of the mechanisms that increase and reduce inequality, much greater appreciation of its deleterious social and economic consequences, and significant ongoing work on innovative methodologies to measure inequality, including in the context of developing, emerging and fragile states. In its relationship with development, inequality may be regarded as an expression of diverging rhythms in terms of social and economic progress, and it may also be regarded as a consequence of the disembedding of the rhythms of production, reproduction and distribution from their social and economic foundations.

Against this background, this panel will discuss the dynamics, measures, causes and consequences of social and economic inequality, in its relation with processes of development and change, with a particular focus on Portuguese-speaking developing and emerging countries. We welcome papers with an empirical and/or theoretical focus, and papers that focus on specific countries as well as comparative analyses and exercises.
