CEsA researchers Ana Mafalda Leite and Jessica Falconi join committees of an international congress on African Independences
CEsA researchers Ana Mafalda Leite and Jessica Falconi are part of the Scientific Committee and the Organising Committee, respectively, for the International Congress African Independences: Processes, Imaginaries, Connections, which will take place from December 10 to 12, 2025 at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. Organised by the Centre for History and the Centre for Lusophone and European Literatures at the University of Lisbon, and funded by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, the event aims to provide a platform for reflection on the knowledge produced over half a century of African Independences while also fostering new perspectives and approaches through an intense dialogue across all disciplinary fields.
The keynote speakers will include Jean-Michel Mabeko-Tali, essayist, specialist in the political history of Angola and the Congo, and full professor of African History at Howard University; Marissa J. Moorman, writer, editor, and full professor of African Cultural Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Teresa Cruz e Silva, member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and CODESRIA, as well as retired full professor at Eduardo Mondlane University.
The conference has launched a call for papers, with a submission deadline of March 31, 2025. Proposals should align with one of the following five themes:
- Balances, new perspectives, and future challenges for historiography on African independences
- Projects and dynamics of political action in the anti-colonial struggle
- Armed struggles and resistances: choices, tensions, and conflicts
- Imaginaries of African independences: oral, written, and visual narratives
- African independences and the world: international solidarities
