CEsA and ANIGB launch eBook on the informal trade of agricultural products in Guinea-Bissau

The CEsA – Centre for African and Development Studies (ISEG Research/ISEG – University of Lisbon) and ANIGB – National Association of Surveyors of Guinea-Bissau launched, in August 2025, the eBook Informal Trade Circuits of Agricultural Products in Guinea-Bissau: Analysis Report (in Portuguese Circuitos de Comercialização Informal de Produtos Agrícolas na Guiné-Bissau: Relatório de Análise). The publication is authored by researchers Carlos Sangreman (CEsA/ISEG Research/ISEG – University of Lisbon) and João Vaz (ANIGB and Guinean League for Human Rights).

Based on field research, the study analyses the strategies, challenges, and operational logics adopted by vendors – most of them women – who ensure not only the supply of urban centres but also the livelihood of thousands of Guinean families.

The eBook is available for free download [here], in Portuguese.

Abstract of the ebook Informal Trade Circuits of Agricultural Products in Guinea-Bissau: Analysis Report (in Portuguese, Circuitos de Comercialização Informal de Produtos Agrícolas na Guiné-Bissau: Relatório de Análise’)

This book examines the informal circuits of agricultural product marketing in Guinea-Bissau, based on field research conducted across all regions of the country. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data, the study reveals the strategies, challenges, and operational logics adopted by vendors — particularly women — who ensure urban supply and the livelihood of thousands of families. Focusing on the female informal economy, it highlights practices of resistance, community solidarity, and exclusion. The book also offers recommendations for public policies that acknowledge and value this vital sector.
